PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Entering Pawtucket) — Bryan Hodgson was formally introduced as the new head coach of the Providence Friars men's basketball on Wednesday, promising to bring energy, discipline and a relentless recruiting approach to one of New England’s most storied college basketball programs.

Hodgson takes over the program at Providence College following a coaching change earlier this month. School officials said they were impressed with Hodgson’s track record as a recruiter and his ability to build competitive programs.

Speaking during his introductory press conference, Hodgson said he understands the expectations that come with leading the Friars.

“We’re going to work every single day to make Friartown proud,” Hodgson said. “This program has incredible tradition, and we’re going to build a team that competes with toughness, discipline and heart.”

Hodgson most recently served as head coach at Arkansas State University, where he quickly turned heads after leading the Red Wolves to a strong season and generating national attention for his recruiting success.

Before that, Hodgson spent several years as an assistant coach under Nate Oats at University of Alabama, where he was widely credited as one of the top recruiters in the country during Alabama’s rise to national prominence.

Providence athletic director Steve Napolillo said Hodgson stood out during the search process because of his passion for building a winning culture.

“Bryan’s energy is contagious,” Napolillo said. “He has a proven ability to connect with student-athletes, recruit at a high level and develop a program that plays hard and plays together.”

Hodgson said his immediate focus will be connecting with current players, working the transfer portal and re-energizing recruiting efforts as the program prepares for the upcoming season.

Providence fans packed the press conference room to welcome their new coach, signaling strong excitement for the next chapter of Friars basketball.

The Friars compete in the Big East Conference and play their home games at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in downtown Providence.

“This city loves basketball,” Hodgson said. “We’re going to give them a team they can be proud of.”
