Warwick Ranks #2 for Safety . But National Studies Reveal a Different Side of Pawtucket.

By Entering Pawtucket | October 2026

When a recent national study ranked Warwick, Rhode Island, as the second-safest city in America, it was certainly a reason for Warwick residents to celebrate.

But it also raised an interesting question: How much do these national rankings really tell us about the communities we call home?

And what about Pawtucket?

While Warwick is receiving national recognition for safety, other studies reveal that Pawtucket has some impressive rankings of its own, particularly in diversity, access, growth and housing affordability.

The numbers may surprise you.

Warwick Named America's Second-Safest City. But There's More to the Story

According to WalletHub's 2026 Safest Cities in America report, Warwick ranked second nationally, behind Juneau, Alaska.

That's an impressive accomplishment, and Warwick deserves recognition for performing well across the study's safety measures.

However, there's an important detail that can easily get lost in the headlines.

WalletHub evaluated just 182 cities across the entire United States.

For perspective, America has thousands of incorporated cities, towns and villages. WalletHub's sample represented only a small fraction of those municipalities.

The study included the 150 most populous U.S. cities, plus at least two of the most populous cities in each state.

The researchers evaluated 41 indicators across three major categories:

  • Home and community safety, including crime and traffic-related risks.

  • Natural disaster risk.

  • Financial safety, including employment, insurance and other economic indicators.

This means Warwick wasn't necessarily determined to be the second-safest city out of every city in America. It was ranked second among the 182 cities selected for the study.

That distinction matters.

Pawtucket was not included in this particular WalletHub study. Therefore, the report provides no direct comparison between Warwick and Pawtucket.

It's also important to recognize that WalletHub's safety ranking measures much more than violent or property crime.

A city can benefit from strong financial indicators or relatively low natural disaster risks, even when those factors don't necessarily reflect how safe residents feel walking through their neighborhoods.

None of this takes away from Warwick's achievement. It simply provides the context necessary to understand what the ranking actually means.

Meanwhile, Pawtucket Has Some Impressive National Rankings of Its Own

Pawtucket doesn't always receive favorable attention in discussions about quality of life in Rhode Island.

But several national studies paint a more positive picture of the city.

One of America's Most Diverse Communities

According to Niche's 2026 rankings, Pawtucket placed:

181st out of 6,807 suburbs nationally for diversity.

That's approximately the top 2.7% of communities evaluated in that category.

Pawtucket also ranked:

577th out of 18,453 places nationally for diversity, placing the city among approximately the top 3.1%.

And here at home, Pawtucket ranked #1 among 33 Rhode Island suburbs evaluated for diversity.

For a city with a long history of welcoming immigrants, workers and families from different backgrounds, those rankings reflect an important part of Pawtucket's identity.

Diversity is more than a statistic. It's reflected in our neighborhoods, restaurants, businesses, cultural celebrations and the many languages spoken throughout our community.

Pawtucket Ranks in the Top 16% for Access

According to AreaProfile's October 2026 analysis, Pawtucket ranks in the top 16% of 4,226 U.S. cities evaluated for access.

The category considers factors associated with access and connectivity.

Pawtucket benefits from its position between Providence and Massachusetts, proximity to major highways, and public transportation infrastructure that includes the Pawtucket–Central Falls commuter rail station.

Those advantages matter to residents who commute to work, businesses seeking customers and families who want access to employment and services throughout the region.

Pawtucket Ranks in the Top 22% for Growth

Another encouraging finding comes from AreaProfile's growth and development analysis.

Pawtucket ranks in the top 22% of 4,224 cities evaluated nationally.

The study's growth measure considers several factors, including development permits, population changes and employment growth.

According to the report, Pawtucket's population increased approximately 2% between 2020 and 2024.

That doesn't mean every neighborhood is experiencing prosperity or that every development project has delivered on its promises.

But it does suggest that Pawtucket has measurable development momentum compared with many other American communities.

Housing Affordability: Better Than Many American Cities

Housing affordability remains one of the biggest concerns for Pawtucket residents.

Rising rents, home prices and property taxes continue to create financial pressure for many families.

Nevertheless, AreaProfile ranks Pawtucket in the top 32% of 4,218 cities evaluated for housing affordability.

That suggests Pawtucket performs more favorably on the study's affordability measure than roughly two-thirds of the communities evaluated.

Of course, a city being relatively affordable compared with other cities doesn't mean housing is affordable for everyone who lives there.

A family struggling to pay $2,000 a month in rent isn't necessarily comforted by learning that rents elsewhere are even higher.

Both realities can be true.

Why Comparing National Rankings Can Be Misleading

Consider the difference between these studies:

These rankings examine different characteristics and use different methodologies.

WalletHub's safety study includes only a limited selection of cities, while Niche and AreaProfile evaluate much larger groups of communities for their respective categories.

The findings cannot be combined into a single overall ranking, nor do Pawtucket's favorable rankings in other categories establish that the city is safer than Warwick.

But they do demonstrate why a single headline rarely tells the complete story of a community.

Let's Not Ignore Pawtucket's Challenges

Highlighting positive rankings shouldn't mean ignoring the areas where Pawtucket needs improvement.

Public safety remains an important concern. So do housing costs, educational opportunities, infrastructure, economic development and the quality of city services.

And while national studies provide useful information, they don't always capture the everyday experiences of residents.

A parent concerned about neighborhood crime, a senior struggling with property taxes or a renter facing another increase in monthly rent may have a very different perspective on how well Pawtucket is doing.

Those experiences deserve just as much attention as favorable national rankings.

The purpose of examining these studies isn't to suggest Pawtucket has solved its problems.

It's to recognize that the city's story is more complicated than its challenges alone.

The Bigger Question: Who Gets to Define a Great City?

Warwick's recognition as the second-safest city among the 182 communities evaluated by WalletHub is something Rhode Island can celebrate.

At the same time, Pawtucket's strong national rankings for diversity, access and growth deserve recognition too.

One city may excel in public safety. Another may distinguish itself through cultural diversity, connectivity or development potential.

Neither story should be reduced to a single number.

And perhaps that's the most important lesson in all of this.

National rankings can help us understand our communities, but they shouldn't be the only measure of a city's success.

A city's true measure isn't simply where it ranks on a national list. It's whether the people who live there feel safe, can afford to stay, have opportunities to succeed and believe their community is moving in the right direction.

Your Voice Matters

What matters most to you when deciding whether a city is a great place to live?

Is it public safety? Affordable housing? Good schools? Economic opportunity? Diversity? Or something else entirely?

And do you believe Pawtucket receives enough recognition for the things it does well?

We'd like to hear from you.
